HARARE – Youth Development, Indigenous and Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has given an ultimatum to foreigners operating businesses in the City centre to vacate their premises before end of June or face xenophobia attacks.
Harare city centre has been overtaken by Nigerian and Chinese business people who are being accused of selling sub-standard products.
However, China is one of Zimbabwes biggest trading partner and politically ally.
Addressing indigenous business people at a meeting organised by Affirmative Action Group(AAG) last week, Kasukuwere said: Come the 30th of June if they are still operating in areas which are reserved for our people by the Indigenisation law they will see what will happen to them. They have come in our country and taken our buildings, displaced our people and even gone to our rural areas to displace our small business traders. How do you come from all that far and come sell milk here in Zimbabwe where do you want milk from our people to be sold to when foreigners are taking the market?
Zimbabwe Indigenous Economic Empowerment organization President Paddington Japajapa said he was going to incite local business people to attack foreign owned businesses if Kasukuwere failed to chase them away.
We are going to attack these Nigerians and Congolese if the government fails to evict them, because our people cannot be foreigners in their own land. This is not the reason why our fore fathers went to war for, he warned.
Under the controversial Indigenisation law retail business in the city centre is a preserve for locals.
The AAG is believed to be sponsored by Zanu (PF).
The black empowerment lobby group said it will this week hold a meeting with foreign companies in Zimbabwe to force them to give them tenders.
The organisations secretary general Tafadzwa Musarara told the same meeting: We are going to have a meet the buyer meeting and remind them that the law says 52 purchases of all corporate purchases whether its stationary, security services, machinery whatever should be supplied by local indigenous business people, he said.
