Neutral venues invaded by thugs

MUTARE - Zanu (PF) youths in Chimanimani have invaded the Manicaland Development Association (MDA) offices in Biriwiri area, ahead of the constitutional outreach programme starting this week.

The premises were used as a torture base by the youths and war veterans during the run up to 2008 polls. According to villagers, the youths invaded the place after they were addressed by an army colonel known only as Muresherwa, believed to have coordinated the 2008 violence.

The youths are holding pungwes at the venue and telling the villagers what they should say to the constitutional outreach teams. They are moving from house to house threatening villagers with violence if they say things which are not contained in the Kariba draft,” said Charity Mauyakufa, an MDC district official in the area.

Most of the outreach centres announced by Copac were used by Zanu (PF) as torture bases. Addressing senior journalists in Bulawayo last week COPAC co-chairperson Douglas Monzora said the outreach meetings will be held at “neutral venues”.
