Patients choose parlour

BULAWAYO - Patients at Thorngrove Hospital here now being offered a choice of funeral parlours, after the hospital received complaints that the parlour they chose was too expensive.

The Bulawayo City Councils Director of Health, Dr Zanele Hwalima said:

Hospitals are built and meant to save people when they are ill, but we know that some people will perish and that is why there is a mortuary. The difference with Thorngrove (Hospital) is that there is no mortuary at the hospital. We used to call Farleys (Funeral Parlour), but some people complained that it was too expensive so we give them a choice now.

There was a recent outcry from both patients and their relatives during the measles outbreak when people admitted at the hospital were asked to choose their funeral parlour before being admitted.

The situation is likely to continue as the Bulawayo Mayor said that the city council had no intention of building a mortuary at the hospital.

We are not going to build a funeral parlour at Thorngrove, it is not in our plans, said Mayor Thaba Moyo.
