Poor roads in Hwange affecting business

Hwange - Business has gone down in Hwange west because of lack of transport due to a poor road network system.

Some curio vendors have been forced to close down business because of lack of transport to take their goods to the near-by tourist town of Victoria Falls.

The majority of the roads were made impassable after heavy rains pondered the district.

Villagers were walking more than 45km to get to the Victoria Falls Bulawayo highway where they would get transport.

The affected areas include Chisuma, Sidobe, Monde and Msuna.

Small vehicle owners who had been pirating following the pull-out of major operators had also rested their vehicle citing viability problems.

I have pulled out my vehicle until the roads are maintained. Small gullies and pot holes have since developed making it difficult to travel, said Samson Nyathi, adding that it was becoming costly to maintain his car.

Some of the villagers said they had tried to fix the roads themselves but had given up due to lack of support from the council.

The problem is that we do not get any support from the Hwange District Council. We have sent our representatives to meet with the council offices but unfortunately nothing positive came out of it. So we are walking to the Bulawayo- Victoria Falls highway where we connect to Victoria Falls, Hwange Bulawayo or any other destination, said Amos Jiyane from Chisuma.

The district has Kalahari sands which are easily washed away by flowing water. Deforestation has also been attributed to soil erosion as villagers cut trees to make curios.
