Referendum deadline

HARARE The co- chairperson for the Constitution and Parliamentary Commission (COPAC) Douglas Mwonzora has said the referendum is expected before the end of this year.

Addressing journalists last Friday in the capital, Mwonzora said: All is in place for the constitution making process and we expect that the referendum will be ready before the end of this year.

Political parties should speak against political violence and intimidation during the constitution making process and should help allay fears that what happened in 2008 will not happen again and that their views will be respected.

Mwonzora said the constitution making process would enable Zimbabweans to say what they want and craft their destiny.

I want to emphasize that Zimbabweans should know that the constitution is the supreme law of the land and as such you are supposed to take the programme seriously and ensure that your rights and concerns are enshrined in the law, said Mwonzora.

He said the constitution making teams would be deployed for accreditation today (June 17) and go through a brief induction on tomorrow (June 18).

The outreach programme will run for 65 days. There will be an average of two meetings per ward with an exception of geographical spaced wards, said Mwonzora.

People should know that the constitution making process is people driven. This is a reason why it was drawn from the talking points instead of the constitutional drafts. There are 30 questions translated in all the Zimbabwean languages and these can be accessed from all the COPAC offices. We will make public all the talking points as well as the meeting places in all the wards through the media, he added.

He said journalists from all the various publications would have access to the COPAC teams and coverage of all the whole constitution making process.

We want to ensure and at the same time enhance transparency. There is no special accreditation needed to cover the events except for the customary accreditation from the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC), he said.
