Recently, the National Prosecuting Authority led by Interdepartmental Management Team (IDMT), in collaboration with the Commission on Gender Equality and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa, launched the Red Card Campaign against Human Trafficking.
The campaign is based on basic soccer rules that can be easily explained to the audiences. Once people understand the concept of a red card in soccer language, they can translate that to the inhumane nature of human trafficking. Government said the concept would also be applicable beyond the FIFA World Cup as the symbolism of the red card will remain.
Provinces where the Human Trafficking Task Teams are established are encouraged to distribute the red card in all the events and activities that they implement.
Human trafficking is widespread in South Africa. It is persistent at the Beitbridge Border Post, which is the entry from Zimbabwe where millions have fled the economic and political crises that have battered the country over the last decade.
