The accusations surfaced during a court hearing of the widow of the late former commander of One Brigade, Brigadier General Paul Armstrong Gunda, Rangaririrai Gunda, who is fighting the army over ownership of her late husbands upmarket house in Bulawayo.
Rangarirai has been embroiled in a bitter wrangle with the army over a two-storey up market house in Bulawayo, which they used as their official residence.
Her husband died in a controversial car crash near Marondera in 2005. Soldiers are used to till land in farms of their commanders. Army bosses take the organisations diesel and sell it on the black market. All this is contrary to the armys Quarter Master Standing Order and Rules, said Rangarirai. She said that widows and families of army personnel who died while serving in the army were suffering because of neglect by the army and their children were not attending school.
If I lose this case , I would have let down widows of departed soldiers who are suffering because of being neglected by the army and have their benefits taken away and do not get what is supposed to be theirs . Some have husbands who died in the Congo and they dont know where they are buried and today their children are not going to school, she said before bursting into tears. Rangarirai said the same situation was happening to her and it was just a tip of the iceberg as many more widows were in the same predicament. The matter continues on July 13.
