Women want electoral equality

MARONDERA - Women's Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) is proposing that Zimbabwe, through the much awaited constitution process, introduces a Mixed Electoral System.

Speaking at a workshop that was organised by Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) in Marondera last week, WPC Chairperson Beata Nyamupinga said that Proportional Representational, whereby a party submits a list of its candidates to the Electoral Commission, would enable more women to be included in parliament as the caucus would push for a Zebra system whereby parties would have to list women alongside men.

“The system is good because as women we do not have the resources to compete against men, with PR we will have less violence,” she said.

Nyamupinga, however, said that the PR that was used in South Africa had its disadvantages. She said it was not representative as people had leaders thrust upon them, therefore there was need to harness the PR system with the current First Past the Post system.
