ZLHR lawyer in hiding after attack

HARARE The lawyer who represented a man wanted in connection with uncovering diamond smuggling from the infamous Chiadzwa mines has gone into hiding after being threatened and harassed by the police.

Blessing Nyamaropa, a member of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), was allegedly assaulted by Chief Superintendent Crispen Makedenge and Detective Inspector Henry Dowa, after he attempted to make enquiries about his client, Lisben Maguwu.

Peter Tandiri has since stepped in to represent Maguwu, who has been accused of preventing the police from arresting his brother Farai Maguwu, who is wanted in connection with a report he issued last week in which it was alleged that thousands of carats of diamonds were being smuggled out of Marange daily.

Magistrate Enia Ndiraya set bail of US$20 for Lisben Maguwu, brother of Centre for Research and Development Director Farai Maguwu, remanding him to June 14 to face charges of obstructing justice. Authorities sought to detain Farai Maguwu for questioning last Thursday, but could not find him and arrested Lisben Maguwu instead.
