Chitungwiza probe continues

HARARE - Investigations into alleged corruption activities in the sprawling town of Chitungwiza are far from over after the Ministry of Local Government unearthed several administration irregularities.

The Local Government ministry has so far suspended only a single councillor. Allegations of corruption in the town by the councillors came to the fore when the MDC-T fired all its councillors, accusing them of corruption.

Prime Minister Morgan Tvsangirai then directed the Minister of Local Government Ignitious Chombo to investigate the council. Chombos investigations lead to nothing but the arrest of one councillor.

In an interview, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Sisal Zvidzai, said that investigations into the councillors were not complete, and that the ministry was trying to get to the root of corruption.

“Our initial investigations revealed that there were some improper tendencies in the council. At this stage we have put another team to investigate cases of corruption then they will be dismissed. We are going to deal with issues of corruption so that it will not get worse,” said Zvidzai.

Zvidzai, however, did not reveal what the investigation found amiss in the operations of the town but sources close to the investigations said that many senior council employees and councillors are under investigation for allocating themselves multiple stands at lower prices which they later sold at inflated prices.
