COPAC comes to city centres in August

HARARE - The constitution-making process that kicked off in different parts of the country three weeks ago is due to start in Harare and Bulawayo in August to enable Copac to concentrate manpower in the two cities and also hold meetings over the weekend so as to guard against double attendance.

Speaking to the media last week, Constitution Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga said that, despite the initial false starts experienced by COPAC, the problems have been ironed out and attendance has for the most part been fair.

“Outreach meetings for Harare and Bulawayo will be carried out in August, the idea is to have many teams so that we do this programme on a Saturday and Sunday so that we can accommodate those who will be at work,” said Matinenga.

COPAC seems to be learning from its mistakes after attendance in towns and cities that have been carried out so were low, with Marondera and Mutare topping the list of low attendances.

Critics have attributed the low turn-out to the limited number of outreach meetings to one per ward, as opposed to rural areas which have two meetings per ward.

To date over 930 meetings with 152 563 participants have been held in six provinces that exclude the two provinces of Harare and Bulawayo, which were initially left out due to the World Cup that ended in South Africa on July 11.
