Crisis calls for human rights at Chiadzwa

miners_in_chiadzwaHARARE - Crisis Coalition has called upon the Government of Zimbabwe to immediately restore the rule of law and respect human rights at the Chiadzwa diamond fields where the military continues to maintain a heavy presence.

In a statement Crisis Coalition said that the Government of Zimbabwe should ensure accountability instead of clamouring for a “blank cheque” to sell the diamonds.

To demonstrate commitment to the rule of law and human rights respect the government of Zimbabwe must facilitate an independent investigation into human rights abuses alleged to have taken place in Marange and hold accountable all those implicated,” says the Coalition.

Efforts by independent groups to monitor human rights at the mine have been treated with harsh penalties. The latest victim, researcher Farai Maguwo, is facing charges of allegedly publishing or communicating falsehoods.

“To demonstrate its commitment to human rights respect the government must drop all charges currently levelled against Maguwo. During his incarceration Maguwo’s rights were trampled upon. We believe he is being persecuted for his sterling work in exposing corruption smuggling and human rights abuses in Marange, says the statement.
