Deadline for mobile phone users to register

HARARE - Zimbabwe telephone regulator POTRAZ has given mobile phone operators until August 31 to register their customers in order to ensure more security.

Zimbabwe’s three mobile operators Econet, Telecel and Netone have started chasing the deadline by dispatching teams to register mobile phone users who bought lines but have not yet registered.

According to POTRAZ the registration will increase security, combat criminal activity and abuse of mobile phones by certain individuals, combat transmission of messages or making of telephone that are grossly offensive, obscene or threatening in nature.

The authority would also like to ensure that people will be accountable for their phones. Prices of sim cards in the country, which used to cost close to a $100 before the formation of the GNU, have now gone down to an average of $2 – resulting in a surge of mobile phone users.
