Football fans bugged by bright new kit

norwich_paSupporters wearing Norwich City's new bright yellow shirts are being plagued by insects.

The Canaries have traditionally sported yellow, but this season has seen the introduction of a new brighter, ‘more Brazilian’ colour, and the bugs have been out in force during pre-season friendlies.

The Telegraph reports that it’s acting as a magnet for the insects, one fan posting on a City message board: “Got absolutely engulfed in them today, annoying lot.”??Another added: “When you wear your City shirt it attracts about a million tiny little black bugs.”

Ian Bedford, head of entomology at the John Innes Centre, told the paper: “Obviously in East Anglia a lot of oilseed rape is grown, and these insects lay their eggs in flower buds of rapeseed flowers before they hatch into beetles and fly off to feed on pollen.

“These insects are highly attracted to yellow, because it’s a sign to them of food.”
