Gunnners team manager Wellington Mupandare confirmed that Maritzburg was assessing the Zimbabwean defender. “I confirm that Vheremu is in South Africa for trials with Maritzburg. The club want to have a look at him during their pre-season training. He will be there for a week,” said Mupandare.
Vheremu was one of the heroes of the Warriors squad that lifted the regional COSAFA Senior Challenge tournament after beating Zambia 3-1 in the final in November in Harare last year.
Should he secure a contract with the South African club, it will be a big boost for care taker coach Norman Mapeza as the Warriors start their 2012 African Cup of Nations campaign.
Dynamos star forward Cuthbert Malajila has gone for trials with Maritzburg who are reported to have been impressed by his performance although they are yet to agree terms with his handlers Chapungu.
The Warriors are in a tough group that has seasoned campaigners Mali and also includes Liberia and Cape Verde who are considered lightweights in the continental game but have vastly improved in recent years. The Warriors, get their campaign underway with an away trip to Liberia on September 4.
The Warriors who have made just two appearances at the biennial African soccer showpiece in 2004 in Tunisia and in 2006 hosted by
