Marondera mayor installation postponed for the umpteenth time

The Ministry of Local Government has yet again postponed the official installation of the Mayor of Marondera Farai Nyandoro until after the countrys referendum of the new constitution, which is likely to be held next year.

If this happens Nyandoro would have served as Mayor without an official ceremony for three years. Nyandoro, an Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) councillor came into office after the 2008 synchronised elections but the Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo has failed to install him as mayor citing different reasons.

In an interview Nyandoro said:”I was told by the Permanent Secretary for Local Government that the minister is busy with the constitution and will only be available after the referendum. This is not the first time that the Minister has postponed the installation. The installation has been postponed five times now.

Nyandoro said that even though delays in his coronation do not necessarily affect his work the ceremony was long overdue.

Efforts to get a comment from Chombo were fruitless but his deputy Sesel Zvidzai confirmed the minister was indeed busy at the moment.

“The minister is currently busy with other things, but that does not stop the mayor from carrying out his duties. Its just a ceremony that does not affect the mayor duties, said Zvidzai who is also MDC-T.
