Under new regulations that came into force on July 12, all foreign nationals resident in Mozambique would be required to acquire permits from the countrys National Directorate of Migration.
The move would see foreigners being required to hold identity cards with biometric data similar to those used by Mozambican nationals.
Foreigners previously simply needed a work permit and stamp on the passport to stay and work in Mozambique. The steep permit charge is expected to affect thousands of Zimbabweans presently living in Mozambique and could trigger a surge in the number of illegal foreign residents in that country.
