NANGO welcomes civil society involvement in constitution

nangoHARARE - Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have welcomed the inclusion of civic society in the constitution making process.

The Constitution Parliamentary Committee (COPAC), which had initially slammed the door on civic organisations last week relented and allowed NGOs to get involved in the drafting of the constitution and was currently in the process of accrediting them.

NGOs representative body National Association of Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO) said it had agreed with COPAC to among other things allow civil society to deploy observers.

This means civil society organisations can conduct civic education programmes freely without hindrances in all areas before outreach meetings are conducted.

However the agreement came at a time when some independent monitors were being harassed and arrested.
