NGO builds houses for Mola teachers

MOLA A non-governmental organisation (NGO) says it plans to build accommodation for teachers and refurbish three schools in Chief Molas area near Kariba as part of a drive to improve the lives of villagers here.

The Phyllis Aspinall Foundation (PAF) said it was also planning to start sustainable agricultural projects to help improve food output in the drought-prone area. Speaking during the launching last week of the schools support programme PAF operations director Charles Pickering said the group was planning to build eight houses for teacher accommodation at are Mola and Kalunda primary schools and at Mola secondary school.

We are also going to refurbish boreholes at the schools and we have the plans to spread our wings to some areas we feel other NGOs come and chip in with some resources, said Pickering. We have employed local builders and the local community will provide labour. The community will also be working closely with the project coordinators on the ground and the move is likely to see local community gaining valuable skills, added Pickering.

Chief Mola hailed the foundation for supporting the community and urged the locals to complement such efforts by providing labour and ensuring that community infrastructure built with help for the PAF was not vandalised. The British-based PAF is named after Phyllis Aspinall who was a frequent visitor to the area as a tourist and later developed strong ties with the local community. Upon Aspinalls death, she bequeathed the bulk of her estate to the establishment of charitable foundation that would assist schools in Mola.
