PANOS to provide training

HARARE - An international and regional media development organization, PANOS Southern Africa, says there was serious challenge in the way regional journalists, including Zimbabweans, were reporting on development and humanitarian issues, and has therefore lined up six training programs for Zimbabwean journalists.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean in Harare the organisations Executive director, Parkie Mbozi, said there was a challenge for journalists to report accurately and effectively in development issues, hence the purpose of training programmes to enhance local journalists reportage on the subject.

We have done some of these programmes in countries within the region and still there is a gap which needs to be filled in terms of both quality and the quantity of the stories. What we want to focus on as well is newsroom and institutional policies

which translates to the establishment of specialized desks in the news rooms within each media house a thing which have not happened.

In terms of programmes here in Zimbabwe we have so far done two workshops out of the six we have lined up for Zimbabwean journalists, which will focus on Water and sanitation, climate change ,HIV&AIDS and other related topics, he said.

Mbozi said his organization will be working with United Nations Development Program(UNDP) in a number of the programs it has line up for Zimbabwean journalists because of resource constraints his organization is faced with.
