Soldiers use photos to threaten villagers

soldiers_zimbabwe_terrorMurewa - Soldiers deployed around the country to force people to support Zanu (pF)s views in the constitution consultation exercise, are showing people horrific photographs of victims of its 2008 reign of terror.

At Dandara Village in Ward 3, Murewa North, villagers were gathered by soldiers and shown pictures of their fate should they express independent views about the constitution.

pictures shown were of people tortured and killed by Zanu (pF) militia with assistance of state security agents in the run-up to the bloody June 2008 presidential elections re-run. Soldiers took pictures of victims of violence and compiled books

that are now being shown to villagers.

We are scared of participating in the constitutionmaking process as we could identify some pictured victims, said an elderly villager.

Headman Chitate, who is also Zanu (pF) district coordinating committee member, is threatening villagers with beatings and expulsion from the area should they fail to support his party position on the constitution.

people are taking the threats seriously as a suspected MDC-t supporter, identified as Matize, was murderedb at a Zanu (pF) torture base established at the headmans homestead in June 2008.

Another Zanu (pF) headman, Gumira of ward 8, was threatened by his sons with disciplinary measures should he victimize villagers for supporting MDC. Gumira and Chitate spearheaded the Zanu (pF) terror campaign in their respective villages

in 2008.

Widespread reports of similar threats show how desperate Zanu (pF) has become in its efforts to push through the Kariba Draft, which will allow Mugabe to continue to wield unbridled power.
