HARARE - The countrys second largest mobile communications firm, Telecel Zimbabwe, is set to unveil its Third Generation mobile phone system in the next three months.
This comes after the company has been running tests on the system since last February. The companys Managing director Aimable Mpore said the testing had gone successfully and the service will go commercial with an initial 50 000 subscribers.
Telecel has taken its time to evaluate the effectiveness of its 3G network to ensure its efficiency and seamless integration. The goal is to introduce as much value-added service as possible to cell phone users on our network while also de-mystifying mobile telecommunications as a status symbol and preserve of the rich, he said.??Telecel will become the second mobile operator introduce the 3G services after its rival Econet Wireless launched the service last year.
If successful, Telecels 3G launch will revolutionise communication in Zimbabwe, as there will be stiff competition for clients and this is likely to see improved services by mobile operators. Econet is currently the sole provider of 3G services.
