Vitalis Mudzonga, Justice Chikanya and Tawanda Katsuro were yesterday further remanded to the 22nd of July 2010.The three activists are facing charges under Section 37 of the Criminal Codification Act after they were arrested at the main campus for purportedly leading and participating in a demonstration against a policy by Levy Nyagura to bar all students with outstanding fees from sitting for their examinations.
The Student Solidarity Trust is seriously concerned about the continued violation of the students freedom of association and free expression countrywide at the institutions of Higher Learning. Student activists rights are daily trampled upon by the relevant authorities through the enforcement of the draconian Ordinance 30 which has literally stripped the students of all their academic freedoms. A most worrying concern is that of the University of Zimbabwe where Levy Nyagura has banned all public gatherings within the campus. All this is taking place at a time when the multitude of Zimbabweans are beginning to enjoy some positive developments brought by the inception of the Inclusive Government particularly in the field of economics although the students of Zimbabwe are yet to enjoy the rewards of their bitter struggle for the basic right to education and academic freedom. The students of Zimbabwe demand an immediate end to all this persecution and demand free access to education for all. Three University of Zimbabwe students appear in court.
Three University of Zimbabwe student activists yesterday appeared before a Harare magistrate on routine court appearance after they had been remanded on the 17th of June to the 15th of July.
