Zim to challenge property attachments

willie_spiesJOHANNESBURG- The Zimbabwe government is expected in the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria on August 03 following an urgent application in which it is challenging the attachments of its properties in Cape Town by white farmers who are seeking compensation for their seized land. The Zimbabwe Government filed an urgent application against Messrs Louis Fick, Michael Campbell and Richard Etheredge, aimed at stopping the attachment of Zimbabwean-owned property in Cape Town.

The farmers opposed the application with assistance from AfriForum and the matter was expected to be heard in the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria.

This follows another triumph last week by white farmers who took their matter to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Tribunal court. Last week the beleaguered farmers affected by the countrys land reform policies succeeded for the third time with an application to the Tribunal in Windhoek, Namibia.

Speaking to The Zimbabwean this week, Afriforum legal representative, Willie Spies, confirmed that a ruling against Zimbabwe continually failing to honour the Tribunals decisions was reached.

In the latest ruling by the tribunal delivered (last) week, the tribunal found that Zimbabwe persists with its non-compliance with earlier Tribunal decisions of November 2008 and June 2009, respectively.

Accordingly, the tribunal will once again report Zimbabwes non-compliance to the next summit of SADC Heads of State.

The Tribunal once again awarded costs against Zimbabwe.

Previously the Tribunal had ordered Zimbabwe government to stop its violence against white farmers to no avail, it remains to be seen whether Zimbabwe will be abided by the Tribunal norms this time.

In the last decade Zimbabwe has seen most of its commercial farmers running out of the country due to violent land policies being spearheaded by notorious Zanu (PF), war veterans and the partys youth militia prominently known as Green Bombers.
