According to the table ICC released this week, the Zimbabweans are now ranked third with 63 points from four games having played a game less than the pair.
The teams campaign, however, is still very much on track after defeating Canada, Kenya and The Netherlands while drawing with Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Afghanistan leapt over Zimbabwe and Canada to occupy top position after a five-wicket haul from Hamid Hassan inspired them to a 229-run over Scotland in the tournament over the past weekend.
The result of the match played in Amsterdam saw the Scots drop to second with 69 points from five games, eight points less than the leaders.
The ICC organises the Intercontinental Cup as part of its cricket development program. It is designed to allow Associate Members of the ICC the chance to play first-class matches against teams of similar skill in a competition environment and prepare them for eventual promotion to Test cricket status. Zimbabwe is targeting a return to Test cricket after the end of next year’s Cricket World Cup.
Zimbabwe Cricket President, Peter Chingoka, made those comments in June in Harare following a visit by then-ICC President, David Morgan, and Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, who had travelled to Zimbabwe to meet ZC directors as part of the ongoing process of information-sharing and engagement with members.
The team withdrew from Test cricket five years ago after a mass exodus of senior layers after differences with ZC leadership.
A number of these have since returned to the fold much to the improvement of the teams performances.
