Builders returning home

MAONE, BOTSWANA - Zimbabwean builders who settled here to make a living at the height of economic melt down at home, have started the great trek back to Zimbabwe, as job opportunities in the Tswanaland building industry have warped.

We are packing up and going home. Job opportunities in the building industry here have shrunk. This was mainly due to dominance by Chinese Contractors in the once lucrative construction industry. The Chinese won most major building contracts and engaged Zimbabweans and locals as assistants for low wages. Working hours have become long and strenuous for poor returns. We decided to go home where some construction has resumed, said Josphat Kambarami.

As builders pack for home, Zimbabweans in the transport and informal trades are staying put as they continue to make a modest living.
