The suspect, named Masimba Moyo, made off with the cash just after the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays. Police raided the suspect’s apartment to find it empty. All major airports and borders out of Zimbabwe are on alert for the fugitive and border controls have been notified, a police spokesman said.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesman Inspector Bulisani Bhebhe said the suspect appeared to have acted alone and prepared his escape in advance. He appealed for the Press’ help.
The suspect is a single man without children and had worked for the company for years. It is understood Moyo had an exemplary work record as cashier for Delta, which specializes in bottling drinks and beer. His own bank accounts have been cleared, investigators said. The driver had picked up the money from Delta drivers, and locked it in a safe. He returned for the cash at night, took the money and made off. Delta officials in Marondera said the stolen money was in mixed bills and investigators have no record of the numbers. As no violence was involved in the theft, Moyo risks only three years in jail if caught and charged.
