According to a Government of Zimbabwe latest review of councillors allowances, rural councillors occupy the lowest tier of earnings, despite the fact that their constituencies are relatively larger than many urban areas where councillors earn much more.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Sisal Zvidzai, said the paltry allowances impacted negatively on the execution of duties by the councillors.
“We do appreciate that the allowances are meagre but the issue of the allowances should be looked at in the context of the performance of the economy,” said Zvidzai.
