Educationist blasts Govt

HARARE - Educationist and University of Zimbabwe Dean of the Faculty of Social Studies Professor Rudo Gaidzanwa has challenged the Government to consider the plight of teachers and provide a teaching environment that capacitates effective teaching.

Prof Gaidzanwa said lack of teachers incentives had contributed immensely to the deterioration of the education system in the country. She was speaking at a graduation ceremony at Hillside Teachers College where 343 students graduated with diplomas in various teaching departments under the colleges two-year post A Level and three-year post O Level programmes.

However, half the students graduated in absentia as they were already in the field following the colleges failure to hold a graduation for the 2007 intake in the three-year post O Level programme last year.

Prof Gaidzanwa said effective teaching should be compelled with hard work which can only be possible if the Government gives teachers incentives.

Teachers love their job, but are not supported to do it which is why we say there is need for an enabling teaching and learning environment for effective teaching, she said.

Despite the challenges faced by the students in colleges, the college posted a 93 per cent pass rate where only 27 failed their exams.
