The three-metre tall bronze statue was mounted last Thursday night last week around midnight, sparking outrage among the city’s residents. What further irked the residents was that after it was mounted the statue was immediately covered with a black cloth as it is to be officially unveiled by President Robert Mugabe.
Speaking during a tour of the site last week , Bulawayo Metropolitan governor, Cain Mathema said the government would do everything to protect the statue from vandalism and defacement.
Some pressure groups in Bulawayo have threatened to remove the statue following revelations that the statue was made in the DPRK.

BULAWAYO - Plain clothes police offices have been assigned to guard the statue of the late Vice president Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo which was controversially erected in the city last week at the intersection of Main Street and 8th avenue.
