JOHANNESBURG- A refugee rights group is calling for all refugee babies born in South Africa to automatically become South African citizens. The People against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty refugee rights group official told the ZIMBABWEAN that anyone born in SA should automatically become a citizen.We want the government to recognise and honour human rights as they portray a free democratic society.
Anyone born here must be recognised as a South African by birth and we wont rest until our pleas are met and honoured.
The group wants this provision to be included in the South African Citizenship Amendment Bill. Parliaments portfolio committee on Home Affairs began public hearings this week.
At the moment, babies who are born in the country to the refugee parents assume their parents status.
