Ritual killing shocks residents

MARONDERA - Residents of this small provincial capital of Mashonaland East are living in fear of suspected ritual killers, following the discovery of a mutilated childs body in the town last Tuesday.

The body of the infant no more than a month old, was found dumped at an undesignated Mutare Road Bus Stop, some 100 meters from Dombotombo Police Camp.

The body was cut from the chest with the upper part missing. The sight was so horrific beyond description and those who viewed the body could be experiencing nightmares, said a vendor at the bus stop, Joyce Mirandu.

The torso was taken to Marondera General Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem. Police confirmed the incident and said. Investigations are in progress to establish the motive behind the killing.

Residents attributed the killing of the innocent baby to rumours in the province that ritual killers and human body traffickers were on the loose.

A number of people have narrowly escaped death at the hands of potential killers. Some went missing and remain unaccounted for. An elderly villager, who worked in Bulawayo, went missing in Masikana area, Chief Svosve area some two months ago. A teenage boy from the same area jumped from a moving vehicle at Masikana Turn Off and sustained serious head injuries. The driver of the pick-up truck had allegedly kept driving despite signals by the boy that he had reached his destination, said a villager, Nesbert Marimo, from Chief Svosve area.

A few weeks ago, a woman living at Nhowe, Chief Svosve area identified as Mai Tigere, allegedly attempted to kill a woman from Village 19, Mutendebvure. Mutendebvure screamed for help in the night and was saved by locals. Villagers suspected Mutendebvure wanted to kill Tigere for body parts. The case was reported at Masomera Police Post. Tigere denied the charges.
