Road show to stop the violence

CHIVHU In commemoration of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Youth Committee held a road show here on July 31 under the theme, Erasing the Culture of Impunity: Stop the Violence.


The event took place at Garwe Stadium where 450 people drawn from Chivhus high density suburbs attended. The crowd was entertained by Madiz of the Amina fame, Patsime trust, Totyi-Toyi Arts Kollective and Zimbabwe Poets for Human Rights (ZPHR). A message of cohesion, peace and unity was carried in all the performances with performances calling on residents to live in harmony with one another and stop all acts of violence that hindered social development.

Speaking at the commemorations, the Chairperson of the Youth Committee, Arnold Chamunogwa, said that youths in Zimbabwe should refrain from actions of violence and should seek ways to empower themselves and better their communities. He went on to call on political parties to stop manipulating unemployed youths for political gain. He also called on the inclusive government to bring to book all t he perpetrators of human rights violations.

contrary to the message of peace that Crisis Coalition had brought to Chivhu, two Central Intelligence Organization (CIO) operatives who attended the road show threatened to stop the event, saying that the Coalition had no mandate to talk about things that take place in Chivhu. A man identified as the Zanu (PF) Chikomba District Chairperson also attended the show and tried to stop people from dancing to Madizs song Amina, stating that he was politicizing the event by asking people to put their hands in the air. The district chairperson constantly approached the Crisis secretariat raising unsubstantiated claims that the Coalition was too political.
