War vets selling land

BULAWAYO - Some war veterans in Sovelele farm in Mberengwa South have been illegally selling pieces land to villagers for US$10.

Sovelele farm was grabbed from a white commercial farmer in 2000 by war veterans and Zanu (PF) supporters. The farm has also been used by war veterans as a torture base during the June 2008 presidential elections campaigns.

Villagers who spoke to The Zimbabwean said some war veterans led by John Chivava were selling pieces land for US$10 to members of the public in need of land.

Due to hunger Chivava and his gang have come up with a plan to sell pieces of land for US$10 to villagers. They dont measure your piece of land they just estimate your hectares and sell it to you, said Simba Zhou, a Mberengwa villager.

Another villager, Elisa Chigidi said: We have people from as far as Mutare, Hwange and Chinhoyi coming to buy land from Chivava. These war veterans have even declared themselves chief and village heads in the farm, we dont know if the government is aware of this.

Last month Chivava is said to have barred Constitutional Parliamentary Committee (COPAC) outreach team members from entering the farm saying he would speak on behalf of people resident there.

The COPAC team had to seek the help of police officers from the nearby Mataga police station to gain entry to the farm.
