Church elders who spoke to The Zimbabwean said they were surprised to see an entourage of top Zanu (PF) officials including Vice President John Nkomo, Didymus Mutasa, Oppah Muchinguri, outgoing Governor Chris Mushohwe and war veterans gracing their shrine without their knowledge.
They blasted Nyamombe of being used by Zanu (PF) for personal gain. They said it was unethical for a church bishop to allow politicians to put on church garments without following some procedures as required by church standing orders, and complained that Zanu (PF) politicians bulldozed their way into the church without following proper procedures.
Our bishop is being used by politicians who have blood on their hands. We will not accept greedy individuals turning our church into a political party. We are not here to further the interests of President Mugabe and his cronies, said one elder who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.
In a desperate attempt to win back the hearts of disgruntled electorate, Mugabes top officials have been bulldozing church pulpits to preach propaganda
In his address top the faithful, Nkomo talked about the controversial land reform programme and the liberation struggle which, he said, were irreversible.
But church followers said they have nothing to celebrate as they were not beneficiaries of the land grab which only benefited a few Zanu (PF) elite.
These politicians are crazy they think they can twist our brains by talking seductive language. Our relatives were beaten up and tortured during the June 27 Presidential run off and did not receive any compensation from the former Zanu (PF) government and now they come here and talk about reconciliation and unity, said another church member who was irritated by politicians visiting their shrine.
Others said they were contemplating withdrawing their membership from the church if their leader continued to dine and wine with Zanu (PF) politicians.
Our vote is our secret and no should dictate whom we should vote for, said another church member.
