Education Minister David Coltart said the focus of the strategic plan document was the professionalism and status of teachers in Zimbabwe and would enhance conditions of service for teachers.
Other issues tackled by the plan included the harsh treatment to which teachers in rural areas had been subjected, resulting in many leaving for urban areas.
We want to see that our teachers throughout the country operate under safe conditions, he said, adding that children also needed a safe environment in school.
Most schools in the country have poor sanitary conditions and unhealthy toilets. We wish to have these issues addressed by 2011, Coltart said.
There would also be a review of the curriculum, which was now 20 years old. The review would be carried out with the help of OSISA and the New Zealand government, and with input from every sector in the country.
Coltart said he was happy that there was consensus in the inclusive government on these issues.
