Copac meetings proceed

copacHARARE - The Constitutional Parliamentary Committee (Copac) management committee has resolved to proceed with 42 outreach meetings in Harare this weekend after marauding Zanu (PF) youths attempted to disrupt previous attempts.

The three Copac chairpersons resolved the public hearings would resume on Saturday and Sunday in Harare and some parts of Chitungwiza. The committee met in Harare on Monday.

The MDC Copac chairperson, Douglas Mwonzora said: “The select committee met and resolved that the outreach meetings that were disrupted or abandoned in Harare last week should be held this weekend.”

The constitutional outreach programme was put on hold after dozens of youths hurled stones into a meeting on a new constitution in the populous Mbare district, while police stood by and watched.

Tsvangirai said the the constitutional outreach has been “messy” which rendered the hearings unnecessary “and out of step with the slightest meaning of what could possibly be regarded as a people driven constitution making process”.

The outreach exercise was expected to end this month.
