Culture of impunity haunts Zim – PM

tomana_johannesHARARE - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has raised concerns over cases of impunity that still exist in the government, which, according to him, are fuelled by the Attorney General Johannes Tomana (pictured) and senior state security chiefs.

Speaking at a public meeting organised by MISA and the Centre for Public Accountability, a media organisation which promotes accountability and investigative journalism, Tsvangirai said that the journey to an accountable system of government was not an easy one because of the regressive elements in the government.

One of the biggest challenges facing us as a nation are the constant and deliberate violations of the rule of law. The campaign is made possible by the Attorney General who takes his orders from political masters rather than fulfilling his constantly mandated role. In this he is often aided and abetted by government ministers and members of the judiciary and senior members of the security establishment, he said.

Tomana, who was unilaterally appointed by Mugabe, is one of the outstanding issues in the Global Political Agreement (GPA).
