ZRP Chief Staff Officer Operations Senior Assistant Commissioner Faustino Mazango told a news conference that he was “firing a warning shot” at dishonest police officers because it was a futile exercise to try and fight crime with corrupt police.
“We implore you to assist the police in dealing with corruption by reporting immediately such police officers to either the ZRP Internal Investigations section or through the national headquarters hotline (04) 703 631,” said Mazango.
Some members of the ZRP have been tempted to become “fat cats” at the expense of the oath they took to serve and protect. Police officers have abused their badges, state vehicles, guns and even openly extorted bribes at roadblocks. Mazango also warned members of the public in the habit of bribing officers in uniform that it was a crime.
He said the priority of police should be to provide a service to the people of the country and not massage their beer bellies. Ordinary citizens have expressed their concern about the high crime levels and lack of effective policing in their communities.
They identified corrupt police officers, slow response time by the ZRP, a lack of visible policing, the poor attitude and discipline of police officers, as some of the issues that needed to be addressed.
