DJ jailed for 14 years for rape of schoolgirl

RUSAPE - A popular local disc jockey, Masiiwa Vitorini, (27) will spend the next 14 years behind bars after he was convicted by Rusape regional magistrate, Hosea Mujaya, of raping a 14-year-old girl.

Vitorini, who resides in Vhengere high density suburb and is employed as a resident DJ at Neighbours Night Club, pleaded not guilty, but Mujaya said the state proved a prima facie case against him.

Mujaya sentenced him to 18 years, but four were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

The states case, led by Tirivanhu Mutyasira, said the accused offered to buy the complainant’s mother some matches.

The court was told that on February 14 at around 6pm,Vitorini went to the complainant’ house looking for his friend. When he arrived he heard the complainant and her younger sister having a misunderstanding with their mother over a missing box of matches.

Vitorini heard this and offered to buy another box of matches and asked to go with the complainant. On their way, the accused lured the girl into the bush near Vengere primary school and raped her.

“He carried the minor on his shoulders since she was having difficulties in walking. He bought the matches and went back to drop the complainant at her home. She did not tell her mother,” said Mutyasira.

Later on the same day, Vitorini visited the complainant’s home and gave the mother a cup of beans and some soap.

The girl eventually told a friend of her mothers that she had been abused by the man who had brought them soap and beans.
