Enterprise Zimbabwe aims to revive economy

NEW YORK Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, has announced a new independent not-for-profit organisation aimed at reinvigorating Zimbabwes economy.

Enterprise Zimbabwe was officially launched at the Clinton Global Initiative this week, and has been founded by Humanity United, The Nduna Foundation and Virgin Unite.

The organisation will be a catalyst for investments from philanthropic and commercial donors to fund small, and medium size businesses (SMEs), and social development initiatives. They aim to encouragepartnerships and financial investment, increasing jobs and thereby alleviating poverty and boosting economic growth.

Branson said: Zimbabwe was once a shining example of a thriving economy in Africa and known worldwide for having an incredible spirit of entrepreneurship. Now is not the time for donors to take a wait and see approach. Its critical for the global community of business leaders and philanthropists to come together to support Zimbabweans. By working together we can encourage sustained investment and support all those working for a peaceful, financially secure future for Zimbabwe.

The three founding members are now calling for a further two partners to commit support to Enterprise Zimbabwe.

The concept of Enterprise Zimbabwe was inspired by The Elders, an independent group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela and Graa Machel and chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

In 2011, the organisation will set up a number of trips to Zimbabwe with entrepreneurs and foundations to help prospective investors understand where they can best help.
