Poacher dead, three others arrested

CHIREDZI - A 34-year-old poacher was shot dead by the police and game rangers from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in a dramatic shoot-out that led to the arrest of three other poachers.

The incident occurred at Humani Range in the Save Conservancy of Chiredzi where the men intended to poach the rhino for its valued horn. The four returned fire with the 303 riffle that they were armed with after police fired warning shots. This resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire between the poachers and the police who were accompanied by three rangers from the department of Parks and Wildlife Authority.

Police spokesman for Masvingo Province, Inspector Tinaye Matake, confirmed the shooting and the death of Wonder Sango and the arrest of three of his accomplices, Munyaradzi Chiro (27), James Mupindu (38) and Andrew Murozvi (36).

“Prior to the shooting of Sango, police had fired some warning shots and the poachers returned fire resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire which led to the arrest of three others,” said Matake.
