Thousands bid farewell to heroes of Real Change

mdc_supportersThousands of mourners today bade farewell to three Chitungwiza MDC members who were killed in a car accident in Gokwe on Saturday at an emotional memorial service held at St Marys Hall in Chitungwiza.

The MDC St Marys district secretary, Alex Magunda, 31, Loveless Sango, 58, district vice chairperson and Innocent Muzuva, 35, the St Marys Ward 1 Youth Assembly secretary died after they were involved in a car accident near Empress Mine along the Kwekwe-Gokwe road on Saturday. They were coming from an MDC 11th anniversary celebration held at Gokwe Centre.

Speakers at the memorial service described the three MDC members as fearless men who were fighting for real change in Zimbabwe. Addressing the mourners, President Morgan Tsvangirai said the death of the three was a blow to both the MDC and the bereaved families. It is a body blow to everyone in the MDC and the deceaseds families. For me personally, the death of the three is just unbearable. There is no leader without followers and it is a sad moment for a leader to lose people who support him.

I urge all people to continue fighting for what Magunda, Sango and Muzuva stood for conviction, commitment and courage, President Tsvangirai said.

President Tsvangirai said he knew Sango when he was still the secretary-general at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). Sango had ideological clarity. He was selfless and committed in seeing the country moving on without a corrupt leadership. You cannot take away that spirit of courage from the three members lying here today as they were even prepared to die for real change, he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Deputy President Thokozani Khupe said Magunda, Sango and Muzuva had died when they were still fighting for real change.

The three comrades were fighting for the deliverance of real change in Zimbabwe. They were fighting for more jobs, better education, health and a better life for all, she said.

One of the speakers at the service was the Zanu PF MP for Marondera East, Tracy Mutinhiri, who is a sister to Muzuva. She thanked the MDC for the respect the party gave to the departed three. My brother Innocent was as innocent as his name. When I discussed family issues, he never showed any emotions to show that he was MDC and I was Zanu PF and I respected him for that, a tearful Mutinhiri said.

Sango was buried today at Unit L cemetery in Chitungwiza while Magunda will be buried tomorrow at Magunda village in Buhera and Muzuva will be laid to rest at Mahusekwa in Chihota tomorrow. Meanwhile, three other MDC members who were travelling in the same vehicle with the deceased are still detained in the intensive care unit at Parirenyatwa hospital. They are; Kudakwashe Munemo, Constance Taruvinga and Anna Mubaiwa.
