The games to be played until Thursday at Harare Sports Club are a crucial test for the hosts since a place in the final of the ICC Intercontinental Cup is at stake. ?The squad features a number of internationals like Keith Dabengwa, Sean Williams, Stuart Matsikenyeri and Vusimusi Sibanda. Zimbabwe XI are currently placed third on the ICC Intercontinental Cup points table with 63 points from four games played.

The full Zimbabwe team and Ireland will also play a three-match one-day international series on September 26-30, which will form part of the build-up to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. ICC organises the Intercontinental Cup as part of its cricket development program. It is designed to allow Associate Members of the ICC the chance to play first-class matches against teams of similar skill in a competition environment and prepare them for eventual promotion to Test cricket status. Zimbabwe is targeting a return to Test cricket after the end of next year’s Cricket World Cup.

ZC president Peter Chingoka made those comments in June in Harare following a visit by then-ICC President David Morgan and Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat, who had traveled to Zimbabwe to meet ZC directors as part of the ongoing process of information-sharing and engagement with members.
