Melody Matsvai of Chivhu village was sentenced earlier this week by Francistown regional magistrate Lorraine Makati-Lesang to serve an effective six months prison term, after which she will be deported.
Heavily pregnant, Matsvai admitted that on March 19, 2010 at Newstance ward at Tati Siding village in the northern administrative district, she told a police officer that her national identity card number was 095528314.
When passing the sentence Monday, Makati-Lesang took into consideration that the accused person is a first offender and admitted guilty to the charge thereby not wasting the courts valuable time and resources by not entering into a trial over clear issues.
Makati-Lesang also noted that pleading guilty shows a high degree of contrition on the accused persons part.
The accused person has asked the court to be lenient and that she is expecting to give birth in less than five months. She also told the court she has got an undisclosed number of children to fend for, she said.
