800 border jumpers daily

BEITBRIDGE - Police in Matabeleland South have been arresting an average 800 border jumpers a day at the Beitbridge Border Post, a number they are optimistic will drop significantly following the recent slashing of the passport price by the Government.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Bill Mashonga, said the police were arresting border jumpers daily at the Beitbridge Border for using undesignated entry and exit points.

The situation has been compounded mostly by the high price of travelling documents, but it is our hope that we are going to see the number decreasing significantly after the recent slashing of passport prices by the government, he said. “We have also embarked on intensive joint patrols with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, as well as our South African and Botswana counterparts, to try and control the illegal activities at our borders,” he said.
