Acting Chief Executive Officer, Cuthbert Huvaya, said the council was broke and farmers whose contributions constituted a large percentage of council revenue vowed not to pay until sanity prevails at the corruption riddled council.
Huvaya, who took recently took over from Farai Gwelo, said farmers owed the local authority US$500 000. He said only three farmers out 260 had paid their taxes to the
council.
The workers are owed US$39 000 in unpaid salaries, said Huvaya, adding The money will be paid in instalments.
Huvaya said the council would not renew the workers contracts because the council could not afford to foot the wage bill.
The resolution was made in June and all workers were advised. We have worked a plan to pay them fortnightly. The workers were being paid National Employment Council rates in which head of department was earning a whooping US$1 110, he said.
Huvaya said the council was working on a strategic plan to turn around the fortunes of the mining town.
