De Mbare Snipers Eliminate Gunners from Zaoga Cup

footballIt was a hard Sunday for Gunners fans the world over, as Arsenal and their Zimbabwean namesakes were overrun by men in blue emphasizing their championship pedigree.

Dynamos punished Gunners with a goal to make up for each time they have drawn against the PSL Champions, hammering them 4-1 in the Zaoga Charity Cup Semi final at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday. The result sets up a scintillating final in which Dynamos will meet with bitter rivals Highlanders at the end of October. After a third successive draw in as many meetings in 2010 with Chando Kupisa, the Glamour Boys were out to prove a point and they did so convincingly with a powerful display of depth. De Mbare fielded a slightly changed side to the one that faced Gunners last week. Those that came in made no mistake, recording the Glamour Boys biggest victory outside of the Champions League this term against a good Gunners side.

Matters didnt start according to script when Gunners stuck first in the fifth minute through a well taken goal by David Rediyoni. De Mbare fought back and leveled barley five minutes later when Ashley Rambanapasi equalised through a glancing header, after a cross from the in form Khumbulani Banda.

Dynamos were using their flanks well, and it was no surprise when another cross from the flanks, this time from the right, found Evans Gwekwerere who directed the ball pass a diving Tafadzwa Dube in goals for Gunners in the 27th minute. Gwekwerere controlled the ball with his chest before taking his shot which sent the Rufaro faithful into an orgy of delight.

Dynamos continued to use width to stretch their opponents and Rambanapasi was on the end of an inch perfect cross from Nicholas Alifandika, tapping in from close range. Gunners were reduced to 10 men when in the 76th minutes when striker Makuvaza saw red for a challenge on Washington Arubi. Winger Benjamin Marere put the tie beyond doubt with the killer punch in the 79th minute, chipping the ball delicately over a desperately stranded Tafadzwa Dube. The team played tribute to the fans who supported them even when they went a goal down with assistant coach Tichaona Diya saying, they were with us for the whole match and it made a big difference.
