Govt gives housing loans

homesBULAWAYO The government has given US$6million in housing loans to civil servants, in a move aimed at improving living conditions for its workers.

The Government, through the Ministry of Finance, availed US$6 million to provide housing loans to civil servants countrywide to afford them decent accommodation. The facility will be disbursed to approved applicants at five per cent interest, repayable over a period of 10 years.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Social Amenities, David Munyoro, said the Government would assist civil servants who have stands or unfinished houses to access loans to build houses.

He said the idea of coming up with the loans was necessitated by high rentals civil servants were subjected.

We are trying to address the issue of low salaries and rentals so that civil servants also get proper accommodation. For now the focus is on civil servants, but in future we will widen our net to cover public service workers in general, including those employed by parastatals, said Munyoro.
