MDC supporters assaulted

mdc_symbolChimanimani - Several MDC supporters in Machongwe area in Chimanimani were over the weekend tortured and assaulted by suspected Zanu (PF) youths, while others have fled their villages.

Villagers told The Zimbabwean this week that political violence was allegedly being instigated by Joshua Sako, the son of a commercial farmer who is also a member of the Zanu (PF) National Youth Assembly and Jane Knight, Zanu (PF) Womens league Manicaland provincial member.

Since Mugabes address to the youths and womens league in Harare, people of Machongwe have been having sleepless nights. It appears as if these youths were given mustard by Mugabe in Harare because the way they are behaving is shocking, said a project co-ordinator with a local aid organization operating the area.

On Sunday the youths allegedly attacked an MDC activist in the area and destroyed his hut. The youths, who were singing anti-MDC slogans and toy-toying, descended on Makuyanas homestead around midnight and accused him of being vocal during the recent COPAC outreach meetings.

We were about to go to bed when we suddenly heard missiles raining on top of the hut. We only realized that we were in trouble when one of the youths challenged me to come out, said Makuyana who has since fled the area.

Sako and knight have been fingered in most incidences of political violence which has taken place in the area since the March 2008 harmonized elections.
